Mary MacKillop College staff and students journey on sacred, spiritual, and cultural immersions in alternate years.
In 2025, eight MMC students embarked on an unforgettable immersion experience to the Tiwi Islands, staying with and learning from the community of Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island. Located approximately 80 kilometres from Darwin, the islands were reached via a 2.5-hour ferry journey.
During the immersion, students attended classes at Xavier Catholic College and Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic Primary School, engaging with high school students and teaching in primary and kindergarten classrooms. Beyond the classroom, the group immersed themselves in the rich history and culture of the Tiwi people – yarning, weaving, creating art, and exploring the stunning Trantipi Beach.
We were also privileged to take part in an outdoor Mass and share a meal with the local community, deepening our sense of connection and gratitude for their hospitality.
The experience was deeply transformative, offering insights into the Tiwi way of life and the generosity of the community. Here are some reflections from our students:

This immersion will remain a highlight for all involved – a week of learning, connection, and cultural exchange that will stay with us forever.
